Criminal Division
The Criminal Division of the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office is divided into three main sections: Patrol Division, Investigations Division, and Search and Rescue Team (SAR). Each section performs unique roles and functions to ensure public safety and serve the community.
Patrol Division: Ensuring Public Safety
The Patrol Division consists of several units that are responsible for ensuring public safety throughout Umatilla County. This includes Uniformed Patrols, City Contracted Police Services, Corp of Engineers Patrol, Reserve Deputy Program, and Special Services including ATV/Snow Patrol, Marine Patrol, and the Rural Neighborhood Watch Program.
Uniformed Patrol: The patrol division currently consists of 16 sworn, full-time deputies, including 13 patrol deputies, two Patrol Sergeants and one Captain. They are trained in all aspects of criminal and traffic law, criminal investigations, and crime prevention. The patrol staff is divided into different regions throughout Umatilla County, and they respond to a wide variety of calls for service in all areas of the county.
City Contracted Police Services: The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office provides policing and law enforcement-related services to the cities of Weston and Athena, OR, on a contractual basis. By purchasing services from the Sheriff’s Office, these cities gain the efficiencies of a larger organization and are able to access all the services we can provide, including highly trained, well-equipped, and experienced deputies.
Corp of Engineers Patrol: The Sheriff’s Office employs one deputy on an annual basis to provide patrols to the US Army Corps of Engineers property in the county. This position is funded by the Corps of Engineers through a contract with the Sheriff’s Office.
Reserve Deputy Program: A group of dedicated volunteers support and assist the Sheriff’s Office in many ways, primarily by providing patrols, answering calls for service and providing security at special events.
ATV and Snow Patrol: Two full-time deputies patrol the hundreds of miles of established trails and roads for off-road vehicle use and snowmobiles to ensure safe and lawful operation.
Marine Patrol: The Sheriff’s Marine Unit patrols the waterways and shorelines at the major bodies of water in Umatilla County, including approximately 195 miles of shore line on the Columbia River.
Rural Neighborhood Watch and Crime Prevention: A program that empowers citizens to take an active role in homeland security and crime prevention at the local level.
Investigations Division: Specialized Investigations
The Investigations Division consists of two full-time sworn deputies that are assigned and specially trained as detectives, and a non-sworn Evidence Technician. Members of this division are assigned as General Law Detectives, who investigate all types of person and property crimes.
Blue Mountain Narcotics Team (BENT): A regional drug task force that is comprised of detectives from several police agencies including, the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office. The detectives assigned to this unit specialize in narcotics-related crimes and activities and are also available to work on major crimes investigations.
Evidence Technician: This full-time position collects, documents, securely stores and maintains custody of all evidentiary materials.
Search and Rescue Team (SAR): Rescue and Recovery
The Search and Rescue Team is responsible for rescue and recovery operations in Umatilla County. This includes mountain and wilderness rescue, water rescue, and ground search and rescue. The SAR team also works in conjunction with other agencies and departments, including the National Guard and the Civil Air Patrol, to ensure successful rescue operations.
